Fall 2011 Ready To Wear

Todays fashion is a bit hard to review sometimes because unlike past decades there is no distinct "look". When you think of the 60s fashion flower power and the iconic Twiggy may come to mind in her brightly colored shift dress. Fast forwarding 20 years later to the 80s,shoulder pads and angular graphic designs may come to mind but when you think of the fashions from this past decade, what comes to mind? Probably a little bit of everything from the previously mentioned decades. Figuring out how to label the past decade's fashion is yet another thing historians will have to scratch their heads about, along with trying to actually "name" the previous decade itself.

Here comes 2011, with all its sparkle and newness along with it comes every fashion enthusiasts' version of Christmas, Fashion Week. OK so I'm late on my overall view of this years ready to wear collections for Fall 2011 but give me a break this is a new blog.
Did any designers reinvent the wheel? No. Is that OK? Absolutely. My only peeve about taking inspiration from past looks is that it can be very easy to pin point the decade from which it came from. Sometimes it is on purpose, a lot of the times not. Designing becomes too " easy" when your inspirations are a little *too* inspired and comes off as an out right knock off. I will give it to the designers this year for who the most part everyone stuck to a similar theme, (historians shall weep with joy) The majority of designers this year took to a more dark and sexy, almost 1940s film noir feel. Much of the shows were filled with rich color pallets that were vibrantly blocked together and heavier mens wear fabrics combined with shiny silky fabrics. This was the season of shapes and almost every designer played with volume in their garments. There was a big trend in as mentioned before menswear fabrics which brought a more androgynous look to womenswear. Some designers took to this concept and made garments from beautifully tailored suits to over sized, suiting that looked as though it were borrowed from your father's closet. If Katherine Hepburn were alive today she would proudly wear some of the collections seen in this seasons runway shows. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the runway:

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Carolina Herrera

Diana von Furstenberg

Bill Blass
