Fashion Faux Pas

I think everyone has something in fashion that makes them want to cringe. Mine isn't exactly a thing in itself just the way some people choose to wear their clothes. Because the weather is starting to warm up here this fashion offense happens more often, I think some of you know where I am going with this...

Ill fitted clothes, I cannot stand it. Everything from not wearing the correct bra size to not accepting the fact that you don't fit into those size 0 pants anymore. I wish there was a hotline you could call for people who abuse their body parts by squishing and pressing them into small heated places. Seriously when your clothes don't fit you look like a busted can of biscuits.

Most people gain and lose weight throughout their lives it's just a fact. So if you're going through a gaining cycle just let it be, take the loss and buy a bigger size. Quit trying to squeeze your body into that itty bitty top darlin' you look like Winnie the Pooh. Some people are in so much denial that it is almost painful to look at their body parts hanging out of their clothes.  I went to school once with a girl who just out right refused to go up a size every time her body changed dramatically by the end of the year she was basically trying to put 5 lbs of sand in coin purse, her cup runneth way over. It has to hurt your spleen sitting down with pants on that small.

But you know I am a woman of constructive criticism so here are some indicators that it may be time to get a bigger size:

1. Of course is the obvious, if you have muffin top, camel toe, moose knuckle or any other funny word for balled up body parts in tight clothes, it is time to go up a size.

2. Pulling, pulling tends to happen when something is slightly ill fitting on the body. It generally happens on the widest parts of your body, on the chest or back, and the hips and behind. You know when your outfit is pulling by the diagonal folds the fabric produces. In other words it looks as though the fabric of your clothes or buttons are holding on for dear life not to tear open.

This offense happens to everyone at one point in time in their lives, whether you're skinny or heavier my advise is to not hold so tight to your size number and wear what fits you and buy some dang spanx!

Vanity Sizing: Is It Just A Little White Lie?

I'm sure I have mentioned one time or another about my trials and triumphs as a fashion design student and because I have been through the ringer of learning this craft I know I for one the creative process designers go through(which is why you should be reading this blog, I actually know what I'm talking about damn it!) but I also know some of the truths behind design that the every day Joe just doesn't realize. One in particular I keep seeing when I'm watching bad reality TV out of all places. Every time I see a designer at a boutique servicing their very rich client and then it happens...

" That's a runway size (insert small number)" I know the camera adds some pounds but come on, clearly some of these women are clearly not that tiny. I don't want to knock a designer for that lie ( because seriously, it takes some lady balls to be a working

designer) but the average woman who doesn't know there is no standardized sizing in fashion, and because of that they hold on to that number like an angry spider monkey. Of course it will make your client feel better in theory but does it really? So I ask you guys, how important really is that number on the back of your clothes? Would you be mad if someone lied to you about how big you were for a sale?

My personal thought is that I work on a don't ask don't tell policy. If you're not asking me about your measurements then I sure as hell am not telling them to you. My job is to make you look as best as humanly possible. Beautiful comes in all sizes so whether you are a plus size or petite if you're a good designer you can make any size look great.

Just my 2 cents now give me yours. How do you feel about that little white lie?

Cindy Crawford On Modeling In Modern Times

Via Juicefriends.com

Its really much adieu about nothing and just the opinion of one person but Cindy's thought about models in fashion has me thinking about how much I kind of hate celebs putting their fingers into too many cookie jars. Here's what she said to Parade Magazine according to the New York Post:
Even Cindy Crawford feels it's hard to measure up to the ideal for women in the celebrity world. She tells Parade.com: "I just saw the Covergirl commercial with Taylor Swift and I thought, 'Wow, it is so hard for models to get a job these days.' You have to sing and act, too. There doesn't seem to be as much work specifically just for models."

Now as a disclaimer I am not bashing Taylor Swift and am talking about celebrities on a general basis so don't send dead fish on my front door step. I know everything is a business and in order for you to be a successful star is to brand yourself and often but has anyone noticed that musicians and actors put their stamp on everything?

One of the original triple threats
It only in recent decades that celebs have branded themselves into other things which was fine the first 2 times but everyone is doing it and frankly its annoying. I honestly don't need to see an actor singing with a line of clothing out and in my magazine ads advertising some product I don't really want to begin with. Stick to what you know people! There have been very few people in the history of entertainment that have been true triple threats, all the rest of you are mediocre at best, even at your own day job.

But nothing boils me over more than a celebrity with a fashion line. Maybe I am sensitive because I spent 4 years of my life in fashion school literally putting my blood, sweat, and tears into fashion, I will admit that but when you work as hard as fashion design students do its a bit of a slap to the face when some random celeb who can barely dress themselves magically becomes this awesome designer.

Believe it or not it takes a long time to master the skill of draping and technical design so its a little hard to believe that in between movies and an album a celeb has time to learn how to do it. What do they do? They hire an unknown, bright eyed  and bushy tailed designer probably hoping that if they ghost design for a celeb they will eventually be able to branch out on their own. 99% of the time that really doesn't happen and of course the celeb in their own little world of awesomeness never publically thanks the designer for all the work they've done. Could you imagine working your ass off on something for no one to even recognize it? and your name not even be associated with it?

In the modeling world its a different monster because it seems like only the US fashion market glorify celebs on the cover of fashion magazines, everyone else seems to have shifted back to models which is a huge relief to me. (Seriously I can only look at Beyonce for so long.)I miss picking up a magazine because I really love the actual fashion on the cover, not because some actor is on it. The business of fashion has become less and less about fashion and more about money and numbers. Which sucks for people who love this industry in its purest form. But who knows maybe one day the general audience will realize that its not cool to have a Miley Syrus album, book, shirt, workout video, and magazine. over saturation of a market can backfire quite quickly as audiences are fickle and maybe then entertainers will go back to their respective corner. Until then:

Viva la model and real fashion!
